Police are investigating a report of sexual assault during J’ouvert celebrations in Port of Spain earlier today.
The TTPS says a 34-year-old woman from Diego Martin reported that shortly after 9am, while participating with a J’ouvert band along Tragarete Road near the Ministry of Agriculture, she was approached from behind by a man who began dancing with her and made non-consensual sexual contact.
The victim pushed the suspect away as he attempted to leave the area. Security officers attached to the band intervened, detained the man, and handed him over to responding police. The suspect was positively identified by the victim and taken into custody, then conveyed to the St. Clair Police Station.
Investigations are ongoing.
The TTPS is reminding the public that sexual assault is a serious criminal offence and will be treated with urgency. Carnival patrons are urged to respect personal boundaries, remain vigilant, and report any incidents immediately to police.
