The People’s National Movement has called for Housing Minister Dr. David Lee to resign, following the Government’s introduction of new fees on Housing Development Corporation properties.
The Opposition says the charges—5% on property transfers to heirs and 10% on sales after ten years—amount to an “inheritance tax” targeting grieving families and the most vulnerable.
Former Housing Minister Camille Robinson-Regis described the policy as “ambush governance,” while former Energy Minister Stuart Young criticized it as a breach of good governance principles.
The PNM claims the United National Congress, which opposed a similar tax while in Opposition, has now implemented it, leaving families to pay tens of thousands of dollars for homes already purchased.
The policy also prohibits transfers of HDC units within the first ten years, offering no relief for hardship or emergencies.
The Opposition says these measures unfairly burden working-class families and demand immediate accountability from the Minister.
