Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is urging citizens to remain calm amid growing speculation about regional security concerns.

Speaking to reporters, the Prime Minister said there is “nothing to fear at this time,” noting that current intelligence reports show no signs of any imminent threat or strike in the region.

“Be calm. There is nothing to fear at this time. I cannot predict the future but on my cards and my books there is nothing to fear,” Mrs Persad-Bissessar said.

She added that while the situation demands vigilance, the government will act appropriately if circumstances change.

“We will keep our eyes and ears peeled and act when we see it is appropriate,” the Prime Minister said, “We have been receiving intelligence reports and thus far I have none that there is an imminent strike anywhere in the region.”

Addressing crime at home, Mrs Persad-Bissessar said recent data shows that crime-fighting measures are working, with murders and other serious crimes down.

“The data shows us clearly that it has worked as an instrument. It is not a cure-all. It is not a panacea, but it has worked. Murders are down. Other serious crimes are down,” she said.

She also denied having any knowledge of an order for all military personnel to report for duty.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander said it is “normal” for all T&T Defence Force personnel to be called out to duty.

Speaking to reporters outside the House of Parliament earlier today, Mr Alexander advised citizens to “stay calm and all is well.”

He explained the build-up of military personnel around the Parliament as due to the expectation that there would be a protest.
