Planning Minister Kennedy Swaratsingh has expressed strong support for Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s decision to declare a State of Emergency in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Prime Minister, leading the National Security Council, invoked the constitutional measure in response to escalating criminal activity that threatens public safety.

Swaratsingh emphasized that such action, while never taken lightly, is necessary to empower law enforcement and national security agencies to restore stability.

He noted that public safety and national stability are fundamental to sustainable development, economic growth, and investor confidence.

“No nation can fully achieve its developmental ambitions without ensuring citizens feel safe and institutions operate in an environment of law and order,” he said.

The Minister affirmed that the Government’s measures are designed not only to address immediate security threats but also to preserve the long-term social and economic well-being of Trinidad and Tobago.

He said the approach underscored the administration’s zero-tolerance approach to crime.
