Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has strongly criticized Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar over her stance on CARICOM, calling her remarks “reprehensible” and accusing her of irresponsible leadership.
The Prime Minister has announced that Trinidad and Tobago would be reducing it financial contribution to CARICOM and did not support the reappointment of Caricom Secretary General Dr Carla Barnette.
In a statement on Thursday, Beckles said the Prime Minister’s position on the reappointment of the CARICOM Secretary General risks damaging Trinidad and Tobago’s relationship with one of its most important trading partners.
She warned that any regional backlash could negatively impact citizens already facing economic pressure.
Beckles added that Persad-Bissessar has shown she is “unfit” to lead, ending her statement with the call: “enough is enough.”
