The Opposition has issued a sharp rebuke of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, describing her recent comments on the visit of the United States Navy destroyer USS Gravely as “baseless, reckless, and defamatory.”

In a strongly worded statement, the Opposition said the Prime Minister’s remarks were an attempt to distract from her government’s failures and growing public discontent over issues such as economic instability, job losses, and the controversial appointment of a new Chief Justice.

According to the statement, visits by U.S. naval vessels to Trinidad and Tobago have been routine under successive governments as part of long-standing security cooperation agreements, including the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative and the Status of Forces Agreement. The Opposition said such collaborations have always been rooted in mutual respect and shared democratic values.

The party also rejected as “malicious and untrue” the Prime Minister’s claim that the People’s National Movement is linked to drug financing, calling it a “gross abuse of office.”

Accusing the Prime Minister of choosing “personal attacks over leadership,” the Opposition reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable and defending citizens’ rights to truth, security, and stability.
