Foreign Affairs Minister Sean Sobers says no Trinidad and Tobago citizens have been caught up in the violence that has engulfed several states in Mexico.

At least 20 states have been affected by the violence which erupted after the killing of drug baron Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho.”

Mr Sobers told 103FM News that checks indicate that all Trinidad and Tobago citizens in Mexico are safe.

“We understand that the violence is centred around the state of Jalisco and Michoacán and the last check that we had with the Cuban embassy that is registered in Havana, but it located in Mexico, is that all Trinbagonians that are currently in Mexico are safe and they are quite far away from the violence that is taking place,” he said.

“The reports suggest that the Federal Police in México have taken by certain controls over places they may have lost in some skirmishes overnight,” Minister Sobers added.

Members of Cervantes’ Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most vicious cartels in Mexico, have burned businesses and erected blockades in retaliation of the killing.

The cartel drug boss was seriously injured in a gunbattle between his bodyguards and the Mexican army.

Cervantes died while the military was transporting him from the town of Tapalpa in the Jalisto to Mexico City.

Three venues in Mexico will host matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with games to be played in Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Minister Sobers says the government has been monitoring the situation and has encouraged citizens

“I think that they have things under control. We have a good working relationship with the Mexican authorities and we have nothing at this time to be concerned about. The Mexican ambassador is always reachable and accessible,” he said.

He revealed that the Mexican Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago met recently with Minister of Sport Phillip Watts.

“There is nothing to be concerned about so Trinbagonians should feel free to engage in the 2026 FIFA World Cup wherever it is being played.”

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be staged in the USA, Canada, and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July.
