Energy drinks and sugary snacks are on their way out of Trinidad and Tobago’s schools.
The Education Ministry launched a new initiative on Friday to overhaul what students eat, linking better nutrition directly to better grades.
Speaking at the event was Minister Dr. Michael Dowlath.
Dr. Dowlath said high-sugar and salty foods are fueling absenteeism and killing concentration in classrooms.
He added that the phased roll-out begins immediately, with vendor training becoming mandatory for all government schools by September 2026.
Also speaking at the event was Health Minister Dr Lackram Bodoe, who warned that childhood obesity is a silent epidemic.
He said one in three school-aged children in T&T is overweight or obese, adding that his Ministry played a pivotal role in creating the new health guidelines for schools.
He said the fight against obesity will also involve a new campaign called “Step Into Wellness.”
