All citizens, especially hunters, are being reminded to exercise utmost caution when operating in forested areas, following the injuring of an Ocelot in the Cedros-Granville area recently.
The protected animal was found shot and wounded on February 22nd, prompting wildlife officials to take it for veterinary treatment.
The Ministry of Agriculture says recovery is expected to take several weeks.
The Ocelot is legally classified as an Environmentally Sensitive Species and is fully protected under the law. Harming or disturbing such species carries penalties of up to $100,000 and two years’ imprisonment.
The Ministry is working with the Forestry Division and law-enforcement to investigate the shooting.
