The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) says it remains in full operational control of all Carnival-related areas across the country, despite several serious incidents reported during J’Ouvert celebrations.
Gold Commander Suzette Martin said the majority of J’Ouvert activities proceeded peacefully, with strong public participation and a significant police presence in Port of Spain, St James, San Fernando, Tobago, Tunapuna, and other locations.
However, DCP Martin confirmed that several serious incidents were recorded. These included two fatal road traffic accidents—one in Tobago and another along the Audrey Jeffers Highway in Port of Spain.
Police also reported that a male who was stabbed at the corner of De Verteuil Street and Ariapita Avenue has succumbed to his injuries. In St James, two adult males were shot at Damien Street and Mucurapo Road; both are currently receiving medical treatment.
A domestic-related stabbing was also reported, with a suspect detained, while another stabbing incident at One Woodbrook Place is under active investigation.
In response, DCP Martin said that, effective immediately, the TTPS has intensified operations in specific areas. Measures include increased patrols in Woodbrook and St James, enhanced stop-and-search exercises, the establishment of strategic checkpoints, and joint task force support on standby.
Police have also seized knives and cutlasses during operations.
DCP Martin stressed that there is zero tolerance for the use of firearms, bladed weapons, gang activity, driving under the influence, and disorderly conduct. She warned that anyone found in possession of illegal weapons will be arrested and charged.
She also issued a strong appeal to the public, urging revellers not to bring violence into Carnival spaces as police continue to work to ensure public safety throughout the celebrations.
