The “ad hominem” argument was repeated several times by the Opposition today, as debate began in the Lower House on the Prime Minister’s Pension (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
This bill will require a person to serve as Prime Minister for at least one year in order to be eligible for the pension.
Today, former PM Stuart Young said he would not attend or participate in the debate since it specifically targets him, with retroactive application to March 10th 2025.
He insists this is constitutionally illegal as it is “ad hominem”, that is, a law that targets a specific individual.
Among those making this point during the sitting was Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles-Robinson.
However, in laying the bill, Finance Minister Dave Tancoo insisted that many offices in T&T are required to serve for a certain period of time before accessing their relevant pension.
He adds that this Bill will bring the Prime Minister into that fold.
