Government is moving to establish a human milk bank to ensure newborns have access to breast milk, regardless of a mother’s medical circumstances.
The Minister of Health says this will be established with support from Brazil, as well as guidance from PAHO and the WHO.
Currently there are over 700 milk banks worldwide, and Dr. Lackram Bodoe says T&T’s pending facility will eventually support other Caribbean countries seeking to set up similar services.
The Minister, speaking yesterday at the Ministry’s headquarters, also said this country had exceeded international breastfeeding targets.
He said the breastfeeding rate currently stands at an impressive 90 per cent, exceeding the global target of 80 per cent.
