Government MP David Lee says the country has nothing to fear about the arrival of the warship, the USS Gravely, in Trinidad on Sunday.
The US Navy vessel will be accompanied by the 22nd US Marine Expeditionary Unit, with more than 2,000 Marines.
Mr Lee said the vessel is here to offer training to local forces and visit that it not out of the ordinary.
Mr Lee said the visit “is about goodwill” and was “welcomed.”
He dismissed concerns about the arrival of the USS Gravely as down to “fear mongering”, and said there is nothing to fear.
