The Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) has reaffirmed its commitment to independence and the rule of law following recent comments by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar concerning the Association’s statement on the appointment of the new Chief Justice.
In a media release issued on Friday, the Association, led by President Lynette Seebaran-Suite, SC, said it has a statutory responsibility to comment on issues affecting the administration of justice and the rule of law.
The LATT stressed that its actions are carried out “independently, without fear or favour,” and in keeping with the highest traditions of the legal profession.
It also urged that public discussions on legal and constitutional issues—especially among those in high office—be conducted with “mutual respect and regard for the institutions that safeguard our democracy.”
The Association said it remains committed to constructive engagement with all branches of the State and to providing fair, principled guidance on matters impacting the rule of law.
