The Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) has issued a sharp rebuke of the Commissioner of Police (COP) following his decision not to suspend officers involved in a recent fatal shooting.
In a media release dated January 28, 2026, the LATT expressed “deep concern” over the COP’s claim that social media footage of the incident—which followed a high-speed chase—did not warrant disciplinary action.
Contrarily, the LATT stated that the footage they reviewed showed officers firing on a crashed vehicle while an occupant appeared to be surrendering.
The Association emphasized that criminal law applies equally to law enforcement and civilians.
While “self-defence” is a complete defense for murder, the LATT noted it only applies if the force used is proportionate.
Crucially, they argued that self-defence does not cover “retaliation” if a threat to safety no longer exists.
The LATT maintains they have seen no evidence of an exchange of gunfire.
