Giant Green Anaconda

The Iwokrama International Centre has strongly condemned the recent harassment of a Giant Green Anaconda by passersby within the Iwokrama Forest.

News Room reported that individuals were seen physically interfered with the snake, causing unnecessary stress and potential harm.

The Iwokrama Forest, home to a rich diversity of species, is protected under the Iwokrama Act of 1996, which makes it illegal to harm, capture, or harass wildlife.

Officials warned that such actions threaten not only individual animals but also the ecological balance of the forest.

The Linden–Lethem Road, which passes through 72 kilometres of the forest, requires drivers to observe a 50 km/h speed limit, stay in their lanes, and remain vigilant for wildlife crossings.

Iwokrama urges the public to avoid littering, hunting, fishing, mining, and lighting fires, while respecting communities along the route.

The Centre reminds all visitors that responsible behaviour is essential to protecting Guyana’s natural heritage and preserving the integrity of this globally significant ecosystem.
