Guyana has been elected to the Executive Board of UNESCO for the first time in 50 years.

The election, which took place at the 43rd General Conference in Uzbekistan, gives the country influence in international discussions on building inclusive, knowledge-based societies.

The Education Minister told the conference of Guyana’s commitment to prioritise academic equality and access, for every child, regardless of geography or circumstance.

She also spoke of efforts to preserve its cultural heritage while promoting creativity and cultural industries vital to economic growth and social cohesion.

President Irfaan Ali reaffirmed the country’s focus on advancing education as a key driver of sustainable development, highlighting efforts to reduce educational gaps.

This includes through more in-person tutoring, curriculum reforms, and increased access to both digital and non-digital learning resources.
