The month-long Indian Film Festival has officially begun, with screenings at MovieTowne in Port of Spain and San Fernando, bringing iconic Hindi-Indian movies to the big screen.
At the Festival’s launch, Indian High Commissioner Dr Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit said the festival is part of the India–CARICOM cultural series and a tribute to mark the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian immigrants.
He explained that the initiative stems from India’s push to promote its film industry, with plans announced at the 2024 India–CARICOM Summit in Guyana to host festivals across the region.
The High Commissioner encouraged local film stakeholders and students to use opportunities offered through the High Commission, to visit India’s mega cinema industry and explore potential ventures.
Meanwhile, Chief Guest Dr. Michael Dowlath described Indian cinema as a lasting cultural influence in Trinidad and Tobago, shaping entertainment and shared traditions.
He reflected on how classics, such as Dosti, would have families gathered around televisions on a Sunday afternoon.
Screenings of Bollywood movies will continue throughout the month, with weekly film announcements and the hope to expand regular showings if the festival is well received.
