One of San Fernando’s most recognized landmarks, the iconic 100 Steps, has been transformed into a vibrant community space, thanks to the initiative of Hideout Signs Ltd and the Rahaman Family.
Musa Rahaman, Director of Hideout Signs Ltd, told Trinidad and Tobago Today that he was inspired after observing locals and exercise enthusiasts using the steps, prompting the idea of a beautification project that could boost community pride and well-being.
“At the top of the stairs, there are a lot of fitness groups using the road, and at the bottom of the stairs, when the run down the stairs they stop to take a rest and then they would take photos,” he said.
“We took a photo and at the back of the photo there was a lot of moss and an old sign. I said this was a great opportunity to change the stairs.”
The Rahaman Family and Hideout Signs Ltd formally sought permission from the San Fernando City Corporation, and with their support, the project came to life. Special thanks were given to Springvale Paradise Councillor Naigum Joseph, who helped prepare the area and oversaw the project.
“The San Fernando City Corporation proudly extends heartfelt thanks to the Rahaman Family, who have been a valued part of Cipero Street for the past 65 years. Their generous contribution in designing and refurbishing our beloved 100 Steps attraction is a true testament to community spirit and civic pride,” the San Fernando City Corporation stated.
The refurbished 100 Steps now stands as a symbol of civic pride, public-private collaboration, and the lasting impact of community-driven initiatives in the heart of San Fernando.
