Health Minister Dr. Lackram Bodoe announced that the government has added three rare neurological conditions to the Children’s Life Fund.
Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, Dr Bodoe said this will allow more children to access specialized treatment aboard.
“The first condition that has been added to Schedule 3 is a condition called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). It’s rare. It’s a condition that occurs in approximately one in 6,000 live births, but its impact is significant due to what you call its multi-organ involvement and high risk of epilepsy,” he said.
Dr Bodoe said the other conditions are also rare and cannot be treated in Trinidad and Tobago.
“The second condition is Malformations of Cortical Development (MCD). This very rare and it is a cause of what is called intractable epilepsy,” he said.
“And the third condition is something called hypothalamic hamartomas (HH). This is a non-cancerous condition. It is rare and again, it an cause seizures in young children,” Dr Bodoe added.
The Children’s Life Fund is a charitable fund that was established by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in November 2010 by Act of Parliament – Act No. 12 of 2010.
