Government leaders are voicing strong support for the State of Emergency declared by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo says the measure shows decisive leadership amid rising crime.

“This critical time requires that calibre of strong, fearless, and unshakeable leadership. The Prime Minister has demonstrated the political will to take the fight directly to criminals, as she is not beholden to any criminal network, nor is she intimidated by them,” he stated.

He also pledged continued efforts to combat money laundering and illicit financial activity.

“We continue to strengthen our institutions, laws, and policies to ensure that criminals have no safe haven in our economy,” he said.

Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Ravi Ratiram says the measure is necessary to dismantle criminal networks and restore safety across Trinidad and Tobago.

“The protection of citizens must always take precedence over the interests of criminal elements who seek to bring harm to communities and undermine the rule of law,” a media release from the Ministry of Agriculture stated.

Mayaro MP Nicholas Morris describes the move as necessary to restore safety, and protect law-abiding citizens across Trinidad and Tobago.

“This State of Emergency is made necessary by the existence of an organised criminal threat to the public safety of Trinidad and Tobago. The government’s response to this threat is a result of continued communication, co-operation and consultation with the protective and intelligence services, every possible arm of the state is being engaged in the fight against crime,” he stated.

Officials emphasize that these measures target only criminal elements, urging the public to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure peace and security.
