Emergency Media Kits have been sent to eight independent newsrooms across the Caribbean.
This initiative was undertaken by the Media Institute of the Caribbean, with support from the British High Commission in Jamaica.
In a statement, the MIC says, “This rollout marks a pivotal milestone in regional media resilience ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season.”
It adds that the collaboration is a testament to the shared vision of safeguarding press freedom and strengthening the resilience of media entities, particularly where Small Island Developing States are highly vulnerable to natural disasters.
The kits comprise cameras, microphones, lights, hard drives, memory cards, and tripods.
They were distributed to:
• Island Press Box, Antigua and Barbuda
• I Witness News, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
• Prime News, Guyana
• SKN Newsline, St. Kitts and Nevis
• SVG Broadcasting, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
• Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN), Grenada
• Zip FM, Jamaica
• Channel 7 News, Belize (Tropical Vision Ltd.)
MIC says the outlets were selected through a rigorous, needs-based application process, with each media entity demonstrating editorial independence, a powerful public-interest mandate, broad audience reach, financial need, and a clear commitment to disaster preparedness and community engagement.
