Former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Amery Browne has condemned what he says is the Prime Minister’s dismissal of CARICOM in a statement backing US naval activity in the Caribbean.

Three vessels were deployed to international waters near Venezuela and while the US says this is to tackle Latin American cartels, there are concerns as to what it may mean for the region.

At a media conference today, Dr Browne referred to a section in the statement in which Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the Government has not and will not engage CARICOM on the matter of US warships in the area.

According to him, it was unfitting given her position.

Dr Browne also criticized what he said were different takes on the same situation from members of the Government.

He pointed to comments made by CARICOM Ambassador Ralph Maraj, Foreign Affairs Minister Sean Sobers and the Prime Minister herself, saying citizens have been left wondering exactly where the country stands.
