Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the new Home Invasion Law makes it clear that deadly force may be justified.
In a post via X, she noted that this applies when a person honestly believes it is necessary to prevent imminent death, grievous bodily harm, or a grievous sexual assault.
Home invasion now carries a $500,000 fine and 20 years’ imprisonment, with even harsher penalties, up to $750,000 and 25 years.
The heftier fine would apply to gang members, organized criminals, or offenders who commit crimes in the presence of children, seniors, persons with disabilities, or other vulnerable individuals.
The Prime Minister says the law puts the rights of law-abiding citizens first and sends a firm message that attacks on homes will not be tolerated.
