16 murders have so far been recorded during current the State of Emergency, compared to 29 at the same time last year.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Suzette Martin says every life lost is a tragedy and insists the numbers must be understood in context.

According to her, the SoE does not mean crime stops immediately, but instead gives the Police Service stronger tools to target priority offenders, disrupt organised crime and prevent retaliatory violence.

Since the start of the SoE, DCP Martin says the TTPS has intensified targeted operations, increased high-visibility patrols, and coordinated with the Defence Force to suppress gang activity.

She adds that initial assessments suggest these measures are helping contain violence and weaken criminal structures, showing progress beyond the raw figures.
