The Christopher Colombus statue on Independence Square, Port of Spain was officially removed last night.

This followed consultation with several key groups, including the Santa Rosa First People’s Community, the Warao First People, the Caribbean Freedom Project, the National Trust and the Emancipation Support Committee TT.

The city corporation said the monument was safely removed around 10pm under the guidance of Heritage Architect Rudylynn DeFour-Roberts and is now in the care of the National Trust.

It will be made available to the National Museum and Art Gallery.

Though the Columbus statue is now gone, further technical assessments are needed to safely remove the remaining parts of the monument.
