Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley has dismissed the claim that T&T businessman Brent Thomas was “kidnapped” from Barbados.
The matter was raised by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar during her speech at the opening Caricom 50th Heads of Government meeting on Tuesday.
According to a report by Guardian Media, Ms Mottley has described it as “a scurrilous lie and defamatory in the extreme.”
In 2022, Thomas was held at a hotel in Barbados and returned to Trinidad aboard a military aircraft, however the TTPS did not initiate formal extradition proceedings.
A High Court judge later ruled the act to be an “unlawful abduction”.
Ms Mottley has rejected the characterisation of the incident as a kidnapping.
However, she reportedly admitted to a need for legislative reform as it relates to the longstanding informal practice of executing arrest warrants between Caribbean states.
