Attorney Clyde Weatherhead said lethal force was not justified during the police-involved shooting of Joshua Samaroo and Kaia Sealey.

Samaroo, 31, was killed and Sealey, 31, was critically injured in the shooting which has raised questions about the level of force the officers employed.

Speaking to TTT’s morning show, Weatherhead said that the incidents leading up to the shooting are irrelevant, even if the individuals were being chased by police or suspected of prior wrongdoing.

The attorney said that no crime automatically warrants death at the hands of thepolcie.

Weatherhead said that under the rule of law, even in serious or capital offences, police are required to arrest, protect life, and charge suspects—not kill them.

He said at the heart of the matter is due process: anyone suspected of a crime must be brought before a judicial authority to answer charges, and not subjected to summary punishment.
