Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro says the rescue of businesswoman Tara Poliah this morning marks a major breakthrough in efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in cross-border kidnappings.

The 73-year-old was abducted from her San Juan home last evening, prompting a coordinated police response.

The woman was taken by her kidnappers aboard a boat that attempted to leave Trinidad.

Commissioner Guevarro says the operation concluded shortly after midnight, and the victim is now safe.

The vessel was intercepted by law enforcement, one nautical mile north-northwest of Corozal.

Two males and one female suspect were also held at Tyrico Bay, with a total of 11 suspects now in custody.

The Commissioner insists the TTPS remains fully capable and ready to confront and dismantle criminal elements.

Members of the Defence Force, including the Coast Guard and Regiment, also played a critical role in successfully foiling the kidnapping attempt.

Their efforts have since been praised by Defence Minister Wayne Sturge.

He says follow-on operations are ongoing, as military and law enforcement personnel continue to work in the Maracas and Las Cuevas areas.

Mr Sturge adds that the outcome reflects the effective coordination of the military and law enforcement, as well as strengthened operational capability under the State of Emergency.
