UWI St Augustine has responded to recent public commentary surrounding its award of the Fullerton-Long Scholarship.

In its initial announcement, it referred to the bursary as the “Fullerton-Long Afro-Caribbean Scholarship”.

This led to queries and criticism over the race of the recipients.

Among those commenting was former Education Minister, Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, who congratulated the students but questioned the selection process.

In a follow-up statement, UWI refers to it as simply the Fullerton-Long Scholarship, saying it was named after Norbert Fullerton and Andrew Long, who are senior actuaries in the UK and part-financiers of the award.

It adds that the manner in which the scholarship is described by the international donors “is not indicative of how the award is administered at the St Augustine Campus.”

According to the University, the scholarship is not restricted to students of any particular ethnicity and is awarded based on academic excellence and co-curricular involvement among students pursuing actuarial studies.

Reece Mohammed, Leah Madoo and Dylan Sampson are the recipients of the 2025 Fullerton-Long Scholarship.

According to information on the website for the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries IFoA Foundation, the Fullerton-Long Caribbean Scholarship Fund “…supports deserving Caribbean students who are pursuing degrees in actuarial science at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.”
