The US government has officially shut down, its first in nearly seven years, after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach an agreement on a spending bill.

The deadlock means several government services are now on pause, although essential operations will continue.

At the heart of the impasse is healthcare, where Democrats are refusing to support a Republican bill they say would slash Medicaid funding and end tax credits that help millions afford health insurance.

President Trump, who has been cutting back government programs for months, sees the shutdown as a chance to push even further.

Despite Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress, they lack the Senate votes needed to pass the bill without Democratic support.

Talks have been in progress but for now, the US government is partially closed.
