UN Security Council approves more military force for Haiti

Haiti’s Transitional Council leader, Laurent Saint-Cyr, has welcomed a new UN resolution expanding international security support to fight gang violence.

The revamped mission, approved yesterday by the UN Security Council, will grow from 1,000 police officers to up to 5,500 troops, including military forces for at least one year.

Haiti’s UN Ambassador called it a turning point, saying gangs now control large areas and threaten state authority.

The U.S. and Panama co-sponsored the resolution, calling it a global show of solidarity
