Attorney General John Jeremie says the United States is expected to intensify military exercises in Trinidad and Tobago in the coming days.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Jeremie confirmed the training involves the US 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, though he declined to say whether activities have already begun.
The expanded drills come as Washington deploys major assets to the region — including 12 warships, a nuclear-powered submarine and more than 14,000 troops — as part of a campaign targeting alleged drug traffickers.
Jeremie says Port of Spain supports the mission, citing links between regional drug flows and local gang violence, but stressed no Trinidadian fishermen have been killed despite rumours.
The US says its new Operation Southern Spear aims to eliminate narco-terrorists and secure the hemisphere.
The move has sparked tension with Venezuela, which has accused the US of preparing for intervention and recently cancelled gas deals with Trinidad and Tobago.
