The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says the School-Oriented Policing program is working and called for more parents to get involved.
Inspector Michelle Lewis told TTT Live morning program that while viral videos on social media of children fighting in schools make it appear that violence is rampant, these incidents are decreasing.
She said the program has gotten good reviews from students and school officials.
Inspector Lewis called on parents to get involved and said the Conflict Resolution Centres are also valuable to help mediate in situations that can lead to violence.
The primary center is the Community Conflict Resolution Center, operated in partnership with the St Joseph Police Youth Club.
The center offers free services aimed at helping individuals and communities resolve conflicts peacefully.
School-Oriented Policing Initiative that deploys specially trained police officers to selected high-risk schools to address violence and indiscipline.
The program aims to improve safety, build trust between students and law enforcement, and deter criminal activity through a proactive and collaborative approach with school officials.
The initiative involves a partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), with officers receiving specialized training in areas like behavioral science and community policing.
