Government has given a measured statement on regime change in Venezuela, saying it is monitoring developments in the country and following proper diplomatic protocols.
At a media conference on January, Foreign Affairs Minister Sean Sobers was asked if Trinidad and Tobago recognizes Delcy Rodriguez as the interim leader of Venezuela.
Minister Sobers said the question “does not arise” and acknowledged that “some degree of change” has enabled “a more democratic transition process.”
He said national security concerns, including the arrests relating to drug trafficking and the presence of US military aircraft are being actively monitored, with established administrative and security protocols in place.
Venezuela’s political situation has been highly volatile in the last few weeks since President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured and taken to the US where they face charges in the US federal system.
