The Tobago House of Assembly has designated April 30th as Main Ridge Day.

This will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the first legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere.

The announcement was made this afternoon by Environment Secretary Darren Henry during a media conference.

To mark the occasion, activities will include the official opening of the Main Ridge Orientation Centre, a schools’ mural competition, and a historical reenactment of the 1776 parliamentary debate.

Mr. Henry also highlighted ongoing conservation efforts, noting that a recent cleanup collected 51 bags of rubbish, an increase from previous years.

He noted the importance of changing public behavior and strengthening awareness around forest conservation.
