Senior Counsel and MP Stuart Young is warning of what he calls a “developing threat to democracy” in Trinidad and Tobago.

His concern follows the detention of a social media blogger under a Preventive Detention Order during the current State of Emergency.

Young says the government should have used normal criminal law, which provides bail and the presumption of innocence, instead of what he describes as “dictatorial actions” to silence critics.

He adds that while social media users must obey laws such as defamation and harassment, the government has “crossed a line” by using emergency powers in this way.

Young is urging citizens to stay vigilant, saying these moves pose a clear threat to constitutional rights.
