Local Government Minister Khadijah Ameen has announced plans to distribute relief items to 14 Municipal Corporation in Trinidad.
The move marks a break with tradition, as disaster relief items are stored at a warehouse in El Socorro.
Now, all 14 Corporations will have access to the items months before the rainy season begins.
Minister Ameen said at a media conference on Wednesday that the move reflects a move away from centralization to localization.
“This distribution reflects the Ministry’s commitment to disaster risk reduction, disaster preparedness and sound emergency management,” Minister Ameen said.
“Over the time, we have been working to improve the capacity of each Corporation to store items, and we will continue that. This will mean enhanced preparedness; the items will strengthen the capacity of every DMU in every part of the country to respond more speedily,” she added.
