Jamaica’s reggae legend, Jimmy Cliff, has died at the age of 81.
In a statement on Instagram, his wife, Latifa Chambers, said he died due to a seizure followed by pneumonia.
Cliff, whose birth name was James Chambers, was instrumental in introducing reggae to an international audience, largely through his performance in the landmark film Harder They Come.
His hits, which often reflected his lifelong commitment to positivity, peace, and unity, include “Wonderful World”, “Beautiful People” and “You Can Get It If You Really Want.”
According to Billboard.com, Cliff was the only living reggae artist to have earned Jamaica’s Order of Merit, the highest honor the nation’s government gives for achievements in the arts and sciences.
