Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the US military presence in the region has already achieved meaningful success.
In a post via X, she stated that the presence has contributed to the reduction in the trafficking of guns, drugs and humans into the country.
The Prime Minister also welcomed the US Marine Corps unit to T&T, as here as part of joint training exercises with the T&T Defence Force until November 21st.
She added that this has become necessary to strengthen and modernise the country’s crime-fighting capability and enhance the TTDF’s readiness, intelligence capability, and operational strength.
The Prime Minister reiterated that peace remains a priority of the Government and pledged to “press forward” to win the war on crime.
Meanwhile, the US Southern Command has confirmed that the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group has entered the Caribbean Sea.
A statement yesterday announced it joins already deployed forces in the region as part of US Department of War’s Operation Southern Spear, established to defeat and dismantle criminal and illicit maritime networks.
This carrier has the capacity to catapult launch and recover fixed-wing aircraft on its flight deck, with a team of 4,000 sailors and dozens of tactical aircraft aboard.
