Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says T&T wants no part of the alignment she believes CARICOM has with Venezuela’s Maduro regime.
In a post on X yesterday at 7PM , she described it as an alignment with a “dictator”, who “has imprisoned or killed thousands of Venezuelans who oppose him.”
Mrs Persad-Bissessar said the country does not support CARICOM’s “zone of peace” approach, accusing it of allowing President Maduro’s regime to continue.
She also called on fellow CARICOM leaders, Gaston Browne and Ronald Sanders to “worry less about my comments and spend more time explaining to their citizens as to why their visas were restricted.”
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that her priority remains the safety and best interests of the country’s citizens.
CARICOM has aligned itself with the Maduro narco government headed by a dictator who has imprisoned or killed thousands of Venezuelans who oppose him.

Trinidad and Tobago wants no part of that alignment, we don’t support dictatorship and drug trafficking and we don’t support…
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has described the Prime Minister’s recent comments about CARICOM as “reckless” and concerning.
In a T&T Express report, Mrs Beckles-Robinson said isolating from CARICOM could hurt key areas like tourism, culture, and music, noting the organization’s long-standing support for this country.
She also cautioned the Prime Minister against using language that could lead to a “dictatorship,” adding that democracy allows citizens to disagree with the Government, and that being in office does not give the right to threaten people.
She reassured the public that the Opposition’s stance is not anti-US, but is focused on safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
