Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says criminal justice reform and strong measures against gang violence are among her government’s legislative priorities for 2026.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday, she emphasized criminal justice reform, and focused on faster trials, victim rights and court efficiency.
In addition, Mrs Persad-Bissessar said her government aims to intrude strong measures against gang violence, organized crime, and transactional trafficking.
She added that the initiatives draw on regional models, including Jamaica’s special zones approach.
The Prime Minister also outlined efforts to fulfil campaign promises.
She noted that 13 bills have already been introduced with the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Amendment, and Tobago House of Assembly Amendment Bill still to come.
Mrs Persad-Bissessar said other priorities include firearms reform, regulation of the private security sector, virtual assets legislation, social welfare, noise pollution, and controlled cannabis use.
The government also intends to reform capital case trials, ensuring multiple-judge panels for life-or-death decisions.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed her commitment to completing unfinished initiative, particularly in Tobago, while advancing public safety, justice, and social development across Trinidad and Tobago.
