Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has described T&T as a “lawless dump,” while pledging to restore order for law-abiding citizens.

The Prime Minister told the Newsday that recent measures, including increased traffic fines are intended to improve the quality of life of citizens who try to live a good and decent life.

She said disorder has grown due to what she called entitled attitudes, adding that personal choices carry consequences.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar also criticised the Opposition, claiming it does not act in the best interest of its supporters, and said her focus remains on healthcare, education, security and sustainable jobs for citizens.

Meanwhile, on a comment posted to Facebook, MinisterDave Tancoo stressed that only those who choose to break the law should be concerned about the increases.

He says responsible citizens have nothing to fear if they comply with road traffic laws.

Opposition Leader Penelope Beckles-Robinson is urging the Prime Minister to reverse the recent increase in traffic fines.

In a Facebook post, she claimed the Prime Minister misunderstood the purpose of demerit points and is using “excessive taxation, punitive fines and intimidation” to cover a budget shortfall caused by overestimating oil prices.

Mrs Beckles-Robinson said these measures are not about public safety but about raising revenue, which go against the promises made during the UNC’s 2025 election campaign.

She called on the Prime Minister to be transparent about the nation’s financial situation.
