Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has extended warm congratulations to Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley following her historic third consecutive victory in the February 11, 2026 General Elections.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar described the outcome as a milestone that reflects both Prime Minister Mottley’s leadership and the confidence of the Barbadian electorate.
“This renewed mandate reflects the deep confidence of the Barbadian people in Prime Minister Mottley’s leadership, and in the vision, record, and achievements of the Barbados Labour Party,” Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar said. “Her resounding victory stands as a powerful affirmation of trust earned and leadership proven.”
She also congratulated the Barbados Labour Party on its decisive electoral success and commended the people of Barbados for what she described as a peaceful and decisive democratic exercise.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar noted that securing a third consecutive landslide mandate is an exceptional achievement, particularly in a rapidly changing global environment.
“To secure a third consecutive landslide mandate is an exceptional accomplishment and a testament to her steadfast commitment to national development, resilience, and progress,” she stated.
Highlighting their long-standing relationship, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar reflected on her personal and professional friendship with Prime Minister Mottley, which began decades ago during their early careers as Caribbean attorneys. She recalled working alongside Mottley on regional legal matters, including a 2009 constitutional challenge in Saint Kitts and Nevis, noting that the experience underscored their shared respect for constitutional governance and the rule of law.
The Prime Minister also spoke of her own ties to Barbados, recalling her time living on the island while pursuing legal studies at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in the early 1980s.
“During that formative period, I was profoundly touched by the strength, intelligence, discipline, and diligence of the Barbadian people,” she said, adding that those years shaped her enduring respect and affection for the country.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar further referenced Prime Minister Mottley’s attendance at her swearing-in ceremony following the United National Congress’ victory in Trinidad and Tobago’s April 28, 2025 General Elections, describing the gesture as symbolic of the strong and unbreakable ties between the two CARICOM nations.
She reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to continued cooperation with Barbados on key regional priorities, including food and energy security, climate resilience, economic integration, and strengthening the Caribbean’s global voice.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar concluded by wishing Prime Minister Mottley and her government continued wisdom and strength, and extended best wishes to the people of Barbados for enduring peace, prosperity, and success.
