Concern is rising as the Piparo mud volcano has shown signs of heightened activity.
A villager told 103.1FM News the activity started at 9:30am and mud and gases are spewing out of the cone of the volcano every 30 seconds.
In addition, a nearby roadway is now impassable.
Activity underground has caused the road to rise up a few inches; the asphalt surface is marked with wide cracks.
The mud volcano at Piparo erupted in spectacularly in February 1997, spewing mud up to 200 feet in the air, burying homes, vehicles, and property and displacing 31 families.
In response, the Works and Infrastructure Minister, Jearlean John, said the Piparo mud volcano was a “top priority concern.”
Ms John said she is awaiting a report, and intends to go to Piparo later on Wednesday or on Thursday morning to view the situation with her team.
