Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath has accused Opposition Leader Penelope Beckles of ‘selective outrage’ after her criticism of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The Opposition Leader said earlier this week the country “deserves better than an insecure Prime Minister,” saying her behaviour was not becoming of the office.

However, Mr Padarath said Ms Beckles-Robinson remained silent during past controversial remarks made by senior members of the former administration, including then–Prime Minister Keith Rowley and Minister Stuart Young.

Mr Padarath argues that Beckles failed to speak out against what it describes as derogatory or demeaning political statements over the years, and questions her credibility in now condemning the Prime Minister.

He concluded that if Ms. Beckles wishes to call for higher standards in public discourse, she must first address what it calls her own history of inaction.
