More Tobago beaches closed following shark attack

More beaches in Tobago have been closed following notices of shark sightings in the Grafton Area.

THA CHief Secretary says, out of an abundance of caution, the following beaches will be closed for the remaining portion of today: Plymouth, Courland Bay, Black Rock, Mt. Irvine, Buccoo, Pigeon Point, Store Bay and all coastal areas in between.

This will lead to a temporary suspension of the reef tours in the area.

Fisherfolk and mariners should exercise caution when operating in the area.

Mr Augustine says they are doing drone reconnaissance/surveillance and Coast Guard surveillance, while  the Department of Fisheries is combing the area to ensure safety.

This morning, a 64-year-old British man sustained severe injuries after being attacked by what appeared to be a bull shark, about 10 metres from the shore in the vicinity of the Starfish Hotel.

Identified as Peter Smith, he  is currently receiving critical care at the Scarborough General Hospital after his left hand and left thigh were severed.

He also suffered a laceration to his stomach.

Turtle Beach/Courland Bay was temporarily closed immediately after the incident.
