Energy Minister Dr Roodal says that the National Gas Company has reported losses for the first time in five years, including $1.3 billion in 2023.
He clashed with former Energy Minister Stuart Young, who had tabled questions about NGC, and the Woodside Energy Company’s divestment of Blocks 2C and 3A to Parenco in 2025.
He said over the past five years, NGC has spent over $10 million in non-revenue-generating expenditures, including sponsorships.
Dr Moonilal defended the spending stating that NGC reviews sponsorships based on revenue and previous profits exceed $1.6 billion after tax.
On the Beetham Wastewater Plant arbitration, Dr Moonilal said the NGC is legally barred from publicly sharing details of the matter.
He said that Parliament members can submit questions, but full disclosure is restricted by confidentiality agreements.
On the Woodside Energy matter, Dr Moonilal said Mr Young was aware of it and gave consent to the divestment.
He said there was no major impact on employment, and accused critics of hypocrisy for misrepresenting government knowledge of the divestment.
