The Ministry of Education says early reports indicate that the incident which left a seven-year-old primary school student critically injured may have been accidental.

CNC3 News reports that the child was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

Doctors later confirmed he suffered a ruptured spleen and remains in critical condition.

His mother said she was told her son had been pushed at school, but police officers say the injuries don’t match a simple push.

The Ministry says a full investigation is underway and the matter is being treated with the highest level of seriousness.

Teams from the Student Support Services Division, the School Supervision and Management Division, and the TTPS have visited the school to offer support and gather information as inquiries continue.
