Stuart Young says he will not attend or participate in today’s debate on the Prime Minister’s Pension (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

This bill will introduce the requirement for a person to serve as Prime Minister for at least one year from their date of appointment, in order to be eligible for the pension.

Mr Young says it specifically targets him as former Prime Minister, with retroactive application to March 10th 2025.

In a statement, he insists that this is constitutionally illegal as it is “ad hominem” (a law that targets a specific individual).

He adds, “I will not support any ad hominem legislation and the abuse of the constitution. As a matter of principle, it is my view that I should not participate in or be present for the parliamentary debate of this bill. Accordingly, I will not attend the parliamentary debate(s) on the bill.”

Mr Young also insists that he did not enter politics for personal material benefit, but to make sustainable, impactful and meaningful contributions to T&T’s growth and development.
